National Council Leadership Elections

At every national convention in an odd-numbered year, four chapter advisor members are elected to serve on the National Council as Members-at-Large. They must be elected by a majority of the voting delegates present at the business session. The next election for at-large members of the National Council will be accomplished by electronic ballot distributed by email during the convention to all voting delegates.

Presidents & Vice Presidents
Article VIII of the Constitution provides the rules for regional elections and who qualifies to run, but here are the general duties:

The president shall:

(ii)  Be a member of the regional executive committee,

Secretary-Treasurers
From the Constitution, Article VII, the secretary-treasurer shall (note items iv and v are moot for now for all but Region I):

(i)   Be a member of the National Council,
(ii)  Furnish proper notice concerning the regional business meeting to the chapters in the region and the officers of the National Council,
(iii) Keep the minutes of the proceedings of the regional business meeting & meetings of the regional executive committee, and furnish copies of the minutes to the chapters of the region and the officers of the National Council,
(iv) Receive and expend the revenue of the region and, with the advice and consent of the regional executive committee, invest idle funds of the region,
(v)  Make financial reports to the regional business meeting and to the president of the National Council,
(vi) Supervise the procedures for awarding the regional scholarships, if any are awarded, and
(vii) Perform such other functions as may be necessary.

Student Representatives
Like the secretary-treasurer of each region, student representatives serve a dual term on the National Council. While the Constitution is vague on the duties, here is a description of the position:

Students with solid communication skills who are interested in serving Alpha Chi through shared governance and in developing their leadership skills are encouraged to run. It is preferred that candidates be undergraduates at the time of election as it becomes more challenging for students to fulfill their Council role once they have graduated or started graduate school. Students bring an important viewpoint and skill set and should also know that as National Council members, they are full, voting members. Duties involve attending all Council meetings during the terms of their service and participating fully to represent both their region and the student membership of Alpha Chi as a whole. In addition to Council meetings, student representatives serve on two Alpha Chi committees throughout the year, and their active participation in committee actions, though not usually time-consuming, is very important. This includes prompt response to emails, participation in conference calls, and information gathering when the committee has decisions to make. At the national convention, student representatives play a vital role. They should plan to serve during the convention as greeters, session moderators, and workshop facilitators, for example.

Students interested in running in a regional election to fill this important role should consult their calendars and their faculty advisors to ensure their ability to attend conventions during their 2-year term of service and to participate in occasional committee work throughout the year. The 2026 convention will be held March 12-14, 2026, in Orlando, Florida. As Council members, the students elected will have in-person Convention and/or Council Meeting expenses reimbursed by Alpha Chi.
